Blood Sword A First Civilization Legacy Novel (Audible Audio Edition) Terry W Ervin II Michael Slusser Gryphonwood Press Books Reviews

I'm somewhat surprised that I'm the first to write a review of this excellent book since it's several months' after its release. Perhaps it's because it slipped out into publication with little fanfare. The author really needs to get with it and learn the rules of independent publishing...namely, any release needs to include having 10-20 glowing reviews posted from shills so that the book can make the "most popular" filters of the website. Well I'm going to post what I hope is a glowing review, but I'm no shill.

This book is the second book of what I guess the author is now calling the "First Civilization's Legacy" series. The first book was the equally excellent "Flank Hawk". The series chronicles the story of the series' main character, a young mercenary who gains the nickname Flank Hawk, in his adopted nation's fight for national survival during a world war among nations, gods, and demi-gods. What adds to the uniqueness of the story is the post-apocalyptic world in which the conflict is set. The setting is several thousand years after the demise of our present world. However, it is also a world changed by an "interdimensional rift" created in the cataclysm that destroyed our world...a change that has given reality to every mythical creature ever known and immortality/godhood to some survivors of the apocalypse that destroyed our present world.

The first book, "Flank Hawk", depicted our protagonist's rise from a militiaman in a petty lord's army to a trusted mercenary defending key figures in the nation he has adopted as that nation fights with swords/magic the forces of an evil necromancer king (zombies, ogres, goblins armed with WW II panzers/Stuka dive bombers).

This book picks up where the previous story ended (the evil necromancer king's forces having received a major setback due to our main character's heroic actions). In this book, another of the world's immortals, in the form of a goddess, launches a war against our hero's adopted nation (Keesee) in support of the necromancer king. With the forces of Keesee weakened by their conflict with the necromancer king, the goddess' army seems unstoppable. The King of Keesee therefore resorts to a desperate plan to obtain a relic of evil power (the Blood Sword from the book's title) and use it against the goddess. Our protagonist is part of the small team charged with this task. Along with him are most of the secondary characters from the author's first book.

The book is excellent in all respects.

The world building is great. The author has created a detailed and believable, if fantastic, future world. It's a world where immortals from our present reality battle as gods/goddesses, some using remnant technology, some using mythical creatures from that future world, and all using the magic that is extant in that world. Within this conflict between "gods", nations of mortals also fight for survival. Through the natural unfolding of the plot and story, the author presents this world in a way that makes it easy for the reader to "suspend disbelief" and make the world "real". The magic system is also well-done. In some respects it isn't unique. There are the typical elemental disciplines (fire, water, air, earth), healing, necromancy, enchanting. But there are some aspects of these disciplines and how they play out that are occasionally surprising.

The story moves at a good pace and never bogs down. There is plenty of action and suspense. The battle scenes and descriptions of fighting are well presented. While full of action, there is appropriate time spent on character development. The dialogue is good and makes the characters come alive.

Speaking of character development, it is equally outstanding. The main character is a young mercenary, who unexpectedly finds himself as a key player in the events shaping his world. While repeatedly becoming a key player in the unfolding events within the book, what makes the main character so interesting is that he is no superman. He is no expert swordsman. He is no talented magic wielder. He is no great intelligence. He is simply a somewhat idealistic man who is just doing the best he can to protect those he serves with the average skills he does have. If he has a "talent", it's survival. We also come to know and appreciate the secondary characters from the enigmatic air wizard who is served by the main character as bodyguard; the prince of Keesee who is the fiancé of the air wizard and who likewise has a body guard, "Road Toad" who is Flank Hawk's mentor; to Lilly, the young/old lycanthropic girl/muskrat. We learn who these (and other) characters are and what makes them act as they do. Most importantly, we learn to care about them as they struggle against the challenges they face. We especially come to appreciate how the characters' sense of loyalty, to one another, to family, to nation, and to deity influences their behavior and the behavior of those around them.

I'm definitely looking forward to a third book in this series.
Author Terry W. Ervin II takes readers back to the complicated world of Mercenary Flank Hawk (Krish) in the compelling sequel Blood Sword A First Civilization's Legacy Novel. The Necromancer King is in retreat with defenders of the kingdom of Keese in pursuit. War has taken a heavy toll on both sides and the Keese Kingdom has been weakened and is vulnerable. Prince Reveron has been worried about a possible attack through one of several passages through Pyrenees Mountains. While others, including those in the military, scoffed at the threat Grand Wizard Seelain had volunteered to go watch. She took Flank Hawk with her as her guard.

Good thing on both aspects they are there to see, not only the first troop movements of the coming invasion, but the fact that the invaders have local assistance. Barely escaping with their lives they make it back to the King's City to discover the attack is fully underway. It isn't taking just the form of land invasion. Led by Fendra Jolain, Goddess of Healing, those with the magical power to heal others have either fled or used their magical skills to attack those around them. In the carnage it is clear that few with magical skills, healing or otherwise, remain committed to the kingdom of Keese and its people. Instead, they have allied themselves with the powerful Fendra Jolain who has chosen this moment when her two most dangerous foes are weakened to attack.

For anyone to survive and for the kingdom of Keese to be saved, Flank Hawk, Grand Wizard Seelain and others will have to make a perilous journey to the western continent. Their quest is to once again locate the immortal Colonel of the West and negotiate the return of the Blood Sword. A magical weapon with deeply evil properties it represents their only chance to survive.

This is one of the cases where a book review does not really tell you just how good this book series truly is on every level. Building upon the first book, Flank Hawk, author Terry W. Ervin II pulls readers back into a world that is our own thousands of years in the future where magic and the sword rule the land from the opening page. Not only does he further develop a number of characters through the skillful use of dialogue and character reactions, he also further develops the world he created that continues to go through war. War takes a tremendous toll on all involved and that is shown here through many characters who are not fighters but civilians caught in the chaos and upheaval. Their stories are just as important as those directly involved in the politics of the kingdom or fighting for their survival in battle. Those non-military non-royal types receive equal treatment in this compelling series.

Blood Sword A First Civilization's Legacy Novel is one of those books that truly has a lot of things going on at the same time putting the "epic" in Epic Fantasy. The result is another fantastic installment in what has become a great series. Using the basic idea of the quest in both books, the author has created complex multidimensional humans and creatures working together and against at a time in a possible far future of our world. Blending some science fiction fact, plenty of fantasy, some mystery, and lots of other elements, the world and those that populate it quickly come alive in a series that just gets better and better.

Material supplied by the author quite some time ago in exchange for my objective review.

Well written with a gritty realism not usually seen in fantasy. Characters have depth and the impacts of battle are not glossed over.
This is an amazing book and the author is a real great guy-- you should pick it up! It also came in a timely manner.
I loved Flank Hawk, so I was excited to read Blood Sword too. It did not disappoint. The action and adventure kept me on the edge of my seat. I love the well-drawn characters and the richness of the world Ervin has created. One of my favorite parts of Blood Sword were the Native American centaurs. Too cool. You don't have to read Flank Hawk in order to enjoy Blood Sword, but you'll be missing out if you don't read them both!

Due to the loss of manpower from the previous war to include magic users and dragons, An elite team of warriors to include Flank Hawk must make a long journey to retrieve a most powerful weapon to prevent defeat against an army lead by a so-called god.
