Carrie Preston is desperately trying to stand up to her pushy family and failing badly. When her favourite aunt dies she retreats into her favourite book, Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South, only to find herself suddenly stuck in that story and seriously messing with her favourite romance of all time! When Carrie's kooky aunt bequeaths her a pair of amethyst earrings in her will and says that they will grant her her hearts desire, she has no idea that she will end up in the middle of the 19th century, slap bang in the middle of her favourite book. With nothing but the clothes on her back and her rucksack, she is taken in by the Hale family and soon finds herself living in the dirty, smoky industrial town of Milton. The only bright spot on the horizon is that she gets to meet the romantic hero of the story, John Thornton but it's not long before he starts setting his sights on her rather than Margaret Hale! Far from living her dream, she is appalled to realise that she is about to destroy the greatest romance since Elizabeth Bennett met Mr Darcy!

Carrie's aunt left her a pair of amethyst earrings in her will but she is told they are not any old ordinary pair of earrings, they are supposed to grant Carrie her heart's desire, but what is that?Carrie Preston comes from a family of wealth, even though she feels more comfortable in jeans than in jewels, she often has to dress the part to appease her family. And on the day of the reading of her kooky but loving aunt's will, she did her duty. Her aunt bequeaths to her a favorite pair of earrings with a note saying that she hopes they will bring her as much joy as they brought her. That night Carrie settled down to re-read Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South for the umpteenth time, falling asleep in the 21st century- hopefully not for the last time. The next morning she unexpectedly finds herself in a country garden; no longer in London but in Helstone. How could that possibly be? Margaret Hale finds her and takes pity on her. Mr. Hale and Margaret believing her to have amnesia take Carrie in just in time for their move to Milton. Carrie is living in her favorite novel! Is it real and will her presence change anything?
A fun read! Think "Lost in Gaskell" instead of `Lost in Austen' (minus the pond scene of course! lol) Try not to over-think it, just sit back enjoy the 200 page ride. I would recommend to any fan of North and South- the book and/or the mini-series. Great book to bring along on a beach day!

... And you get what you pay for. I lost interest about page five, earlier truth be told. Some might enjoy the tedious writing, but it wasn't for me.
As a fan of both the book and the movie, I was hoping for a clever and fun take on a familiar story, like Lost in Austen. Unfortunately what I got was a good idea that was poorly executed. It was not true to the spirit of the story, plodding in parts, with bad editing and in others just plain irritating. I found myself skipping around, hoping it would get better. Rereading the original story is a much more enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.
Love the book
I found this book to be a great way to spend a leisurely Sunday afternoon. I enjoyed the main character and how she adapted to her new environment. Many characters in a similar situation, from other books I have read, spend so much time acclimating that the story bogs down. To me this is a light read and is good when you just want to relax. It was like a friend asking me to come along for a walk in the park on a summer afternoon.
The only reason this book didn't get 5 stars is that there were some editing problems that made me have to reread to understand what it was really saying and there were a few places that felt a bit unpolished. Even with it's flaws, I loved this story. I haven't read the book that she jumps into, but that didn't take anything away from the plot. I loved the idea of being able to fall in love with a story book hero. I think everyone has wondered, as least a little, what that would be like. I found this to be a fun, easy book to enjoy during my weekend. No heavy plot, not too many characters to keep track of, no parts too stressful, just a nice book to run away with for a while. The love story was nice but didn't really tug at my heart strings very much. I did appreciate however, that there were only kisses, no bedroom details. There were a few spots that made me laugh out loud and not many books do that to me.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys 'light' romances with a time travel flavor. I'm keeping this on my .
I do admit I love reading the 'what if' conclusions to North and South and other 1800's era books such as Pride & Prejudice. The continuing stories where the original author left off are great to read if the book is well written and this one does not disappoint.
The twist on this continuing story has some surprising turns. I highly recommend buying this book. Other good 'what if' books regarding North and South are "A Heart For Milton" by Trudy Brasure and "Northern Lights" by Catherine Winchester.
I thoroughly enjoyed this N&S version. It isn't a sequel, it's a "what if". Not as dramatic as others but light-hearted with just enough conflict. There was a bit of a credibility stretch when John was trying to figure out Carrie's "fears". I couldn't really understand the psychology but all's well that ends well.
